I am a 25+ year Silicon Valley software engineering veteran – now based in Portland, OR – looking for local or remote work opportunities. I am a generalist at heart, from building pre-venture funded prototypes in startups to launching products for millions of users in big corporations. Most of my career has been in fintech and construction software but I have worked in a wide range of fields such as security, social networks, mobile entertainment, gamified selling, behavioral marketing, recruiting, science publications and policy reform.

Management: 10+ years hiring and managing engineers, managers, devops/SRE, QA/SDET, etc, leading organizations of up to 25 people, in both distributed and local work places.

Leadership philosophies: Start simple. Excellent managers are coaches at their core, empower their decision makers, have a holistic concern for employee well-being, and practice behaviors identified in Google's own org research. Cooperation, collaboration, and fun are the bedrock to fulfilling work. And finally, seek the balanced path, one that teaches and acknowledges the spectrum of tradeoffs, finds alignment, and executes efficiently.

Technical background: Unix systems (Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD), cloud services & distributed systems (AWS, Heroku), Ruby (Rails, RSpec), Node (JavaScript), web development (React, HTML/CSS), mobile development, relational DBs & SQL (Postgres, MySQL), NoSQL (Redis, Mongo, Elastic/Lucene), Java, C, C++, Python, Perl.
